Rye Primary School

Numeracy

Developing numerate students, who approach tasks with a growth mindset, is the focus of our Mathematics Program. Learning experiences are open-ended, hands-on and are related to real life application. A large percentage of the maths we do in the real world uses the skills of estimation and mental computation. Students are encouraged to use these skills, and others, to solve problems in their own way before strategies are shared and evaluated.

Our teaching staff have been very fortunate to work with numeracy specialists, Michael Ymer, Rob Vingerhoets and Nadia Abdelal and as a result our staff are well equipped and inspired to plan and teach mathematics so that students are engaged and challenged.

Our mathematics program focuses on building a positive disposition and the proficiencies of Understanding, Fluency, Problem Solving and Reasoning. Being open to learning is essential and these proficiencies are fundamental to working mathematically in the real world.

Additionally, we provide opportunities for students in Year 5 to Year 6 to participate in our enrichment mathematics program. This is a select program for up to 12 students who demonstrate a passion, aptitude and growth mindset to learning mathematics.
